This Leeds producer's third album is a prime candidate for accusations of being glutted with influences. Hiphop of all recent eras and areas - Chopped'n'screwed Houston slither, Atalanta bounce, the lurch of Dilla, the audacity of prime Timbaland in letting sparse percussion carry a beat, the stuttering roll of Rodney Jerkins, the chilling piano motifs of the RZA – is cut and shunted together; then there's Autechre's igniting reverbs, Burial's crackling patina, cutesy J-Pop melodies, Marioworld squeals and SNES chip melodies, and occasional moment of collapse into demented free jazz arrhythmia.

Yet wonderfully, improbably, this is a record of borderline psychopathic focus, clarity and lack of fuss. A tidy 39 minutes long, it never adds an idea or sound where it is not needed, is rooted in the new-found post-Dubstep confidence in slow grooves and wide open spaces as dancefloor-compatible, but also has the ability of Photek at his very best to make sparse constellations of lethally-sharpened drum sounds flying around the listener act as a single structure of seemingly impossible strength. And even in a track like the self-explanatory “Drunken Master”, this is dancefloor music, stumbles in the rhythm designed to keep the club dancer alert, not to trip them up.

Most of all, though, what holds the record together is a singularity of vision. Like William Blake, Kidkanevil has created a system lest he be enslav'd by another man's, and operates musically in a graffiti cartoon fantasy realm of his own synthesising called “Tokyorkshire” where his own cast of audio characters dwell and distinct laws of rhythmic physics apply. And as with similarly imagination-crazed British post-Hip Hop contemporaries like Illum Sphere, Fantastic Mr Fox and Blue Daisy, the transmissions from this strange and independent personal world are coming through increasingly clearly.
